What research is being done within self-regulation?
There is a lot of research and resources being compiled around the world in terms of self-regulation. Below is only a small list (at time of posting) of projects that influenced our creation of this project. Each project attends to a different area of self-regulation, but has the same goal of better understanding the process. IF there are ANY projects you feel belong on this list, but have been left out, please email us with the name of the project and perhaps a link to their work so we can add it to this collection!
Abecedarian Project
The Abecedarian Project is a well known project out of the United States that has received a lot of attention within the field of Psychology. The creators of the project have sought out to observe the cognitive and behavioural development of children as they grow and how they learn the behaviours that they do. The behaviours that are being learned often associate with the executive functions and become a point of observation throughout development. We encourage that you check out their website and the cool work they are doing at the link below.
The Chicago School Readiness Project
The Chicago School Readiness Project viewed the gap of student input and perspective in the psychological field of development as an issue they wanted to solve. The CSRP began with early intervention at the pre-school age that developed a strong relationship with the students and their parents all over the Chicago area. The CSRP kept track of these students and recorded their progress as their went through the their years of schooling. The CSRP focussed on the different management strategies that the students developed over time and matured into adulthood. Please visit the link below to see their home page, learn more about the project and view some of their results.
The Shanker Method
Dr. Stuart Shanker is one of the leading minds in the field of self-regulation as he has put programs in place that attend to developing better self-regulation skills that start in the classroom. Dr. Shanker aligned 5 domains (biological, emotion, cognitive, social, and personal) with his practice of self regulation:
- Reframe the behaviour
- Recognize the stressors
- Reduce the stress
- Reflect: Enhance stress awareness
- Respond: Develop personalized strategies to promote resilience and restoration
6 Secrets for Success in Boys' Learning- Dr. Edmond Dixon
This program created by Dr.Dixon address the theory that boys are being left behind in today's education system and that there has been a considerable gap created in success rates of both boys and girls. Dr.Dixon acknowledges the fact that boys learn and develop in different ways and that more hands-on approaches need to be taken to create more memorable teaching moments for them. Dr.Dixon's program and home page (accessible from the link below), breaks down his 6 strategies for teaching boys and includes additional information and resources for creating healthier development skills for boys in the classroom. Some of the modules align with the concepts of executive functions and self-regulation and could be very helpful if establishing self-regulation strategies for the boys in your classroom is difficult.
